Description: Natural toothpaste is an alternative to many toothpastes which are toxic to our body. Most toothpastes are a thick gel, although there are tooth powders available which are less abrasive and contain baking soda. They work to clean our teeth, freshen breath and prevent cavities and plaque by using non-toxic ingredients such as: zinc citrate, xylitol, silica, propolis, myrrh and other herbal resins. There are many different flavors and kinds available, and products for more specific treatments such as whitening toothpastes. Some popular flavors include: peppermint, orange, cinnamon, spearmint, grape and strawberry. After brushing, you may choose to use a gentle mouth wash or rinse to further clean your mouth, soothe (with essential oils/herbs), and prevent cavities. Mouthwashes not containing alcohol or saccharin are best, as they are not as harsh. Witch hazel is a good alternative for alcohol based products.

What to look for: Toothpastes in which the ingredients are biodegradable, vegetable based, organic and minimally processed. Do not use products which have been tested on animals or contain any animal ingredients. Choose eco-friendly pastes that are produced by companies that are using sustainable practices.

Uses: Should be used at least twice a day to prevent buildup of tartar and plaque, and to prevent cavities.

Where to find: Health Food Stores and Online Resources.

Avoid: Toothpaste with fluoride, as research has shown it to be a toxic substance with a rating faintly higher than lead. Excessive consumption of fluoride can strip the enamel from our teeth and weaken our bones. While our kidneys are able to filter some of the fluoride out of our system, it cannot get rid of all of it and 50% usually remains in our body and builds up. Avoid toothpastes with alcohol. Do not use products which contain artificial sweeteners, preservatives, or dyes.
