Diabetes is a condition that affects a large percentage of people. There is no definition of age relation to this condition. It can affect anyone at any age.

Diabetes, or Diabetes Mellitus to give it its correct name, is a disease which is considered chronic as it is degenerative. The condition is caused by a lack of insulin in the body. In extreme cases diabetes can lead to loss of limbs, blindness and heart disease.

A body produces insulin, and if that body starts to reject the production of insulin until the levels required by the body is too low, it cannot regulate its own levels of blood sugar.

The pancreas produces insulin which is a hormone to metabolize glucose. Glucose is a sugar that gives out energy and, if there is not enough glucose allowed to travel around the body into the cells, there is a problem with digestion.

Normal levels of blood sugar are looked after by a person’s body mechanism which is called Homeostasis. The level of blood glucose goes up after a person has eaten his or her meal to stimulate insulin in the pancreas, and the insulin is released to keep the blood sugar at a safe level. If the pancreas is not able to do this, the glucose levels are still high and diabetes may occur.
