Candida 101
Is It All In Your Head?
We all have Candida to some degree or other. The question is whether it is an overgrowth situation. This is important because excessive Candida causes all kinds of chaos. Furthermore, the insidious yeasties are both difficult to diagnose and to treat. If you think of Candida as an invader, taking up space in your otherwise healthy body, you are on the right track. Because Candida can cause so many symptoms, people who suffer from it are often considered to be hypochondriacs. We at Natural Cures realize this is not the case, and that Candida can be such a huge problem that it can ruin your life. If you have many of the common symptoms, you may very well have Candida. Read through the following and see what applies.
Physical symptoms: Allergies, anxiety and depression, chronic fatigue, confusion and/or memory problems, eye irritations, earaches, fungal infections (athlete’s foot, “jock itch,” ringworm) which recur often, gastrointestinal problems (such as bloating, cramping, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, and heartburn), headaches and migraines, heart palpitations, hives, hyperactivity, irritability and mood swings, increased susceptibility to the affects of alcohol, loss of libido, oral and/or vaginal thrush, painful premenstrual syndrome (PMS), respiratory problems (asthma, coughing, hay fever, lung and/or nasal congestion, sinusitis, wheezing), sexual dysfunctions, skin problems (acne, rashes, scaly skin), sleeping problems, and vaginitis.
Gee, that would make nearly every human being a candidate for a Candida diagnosis. Yep, millions of people are affected by Candida albicans.
In addition to the above symptoms, Candida can also compromise the functioning of the central nervous system, genitourinary tract, heart, and liver, and also contribute to or worsen autoimmune conditions such as AIDS and Addison’s disease. Sometimes these symptoms present as fatigue, flu, and poor sleep.
Mental and Psychological Symptoms: Many people who are affected by Candida have the feeling that they are “not themselves,” and/or experience other mental or psychological problems such as depression, irritability, anxiety, paranoia and more. Such patients are often told by conventional physicians that there is nothing wrong with them, or that they are in need of therapy or antidepressant medications, neither of which does anything to address their Candida and, in the case of antidepressants, can potentially create other serious health problems, including an increased risk of suicide and other types of violent behavior.
According to C. Orian Truss, M.D. of Birmingham, Alabama, author of The Missing Diagnosis and a leading expert in the holistic treatment of Candida, many people who suffer from chronic Candida are routinely dismissed as suffering from symptoms said to only be “in their head,” or are misdiagnosed as having a nervous disorder. This, Dr. Truss says, has resulted in the frequent misapplication of psychiatric treatment in patients “whose only psychological problems are those that have been brought on by the failure of the medical profession to correct their long-standing, frustrating illnesses.”
