Hyperthyroidism

Overview

Hyperthyroidism is a health condition caused by overproduction of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include rapid heartbeat, enlarged thyroid (goiter), moist skin, trembling or tremors, erratic pulse pressure levels (too high or too low), fatigue, anxiety, weight loss, bulging eyes, excessive sweating, increased appetite, low tolerance to heat, diarrhea, chest pain, and gastrointestinal disorders. In older people with hyperthyroidism, however, the opposite of the above symptoms can occur. Overall, hyperthyroidism is much rarer than hypothyroidism (under active thyroid function).

Hyperthyroidism may be associated with and often is called Graves’ disease, a condition characterized by an enlarged thyroid, bulging eyes bulge, rash and swelling in front of the lower leg.

Abnormal immune response is believed be a possible cause of hypothyroidism. The exact cause is not known, but certain antibodies from the immune system will launch an assault on the thyroid, disturbing hormone production. Lumps or tumors that form on the thyroid also disrupt hormone production. Temporary hyperthyroidism can be caused by infection or inflammation, and certain prescription drugs.

Hyperthyroidism is less common than Hypothyroidism, yet for both diseases, women appear to be more susceptible than men. Be aware that a malfunctioning thyroid may be the cause of recurring illnesses.

There are several at-home hydrotherapy treatments.  For treating rheumatoid arthritis, we recommended constitutional hydrotherapy (apply two to five times weekly) or a heating compress (apply once daily to affected areas).   • Take a bath as often as possible up to once a day with two litres of 35% food grade Hydrogen Peroxide.

Eat an organic, whole foods diet, emphasizing foods that naturally suppress excess thyroid hormone production. Such foods include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, mustard greens, rutabagas, spinach, turnips, soybeans, peaches, and pears. Eliminate dairy products, over consumption of wheat products, coffee, tea, and caffeinated soft drinks.

It is important to not add further toxicity to your system so try to adhere to the following:

  • Do not consume any artificial sweeteners, such as Splenda, NutraSweet or Aspartame
  • Do not consume high fructose corn syrup or mono-sodium glutamate.
  • Do not drink any carbonated beverages.
  • Avoid all fast food restaurants.
  • Avoid all canned food.
  • Eliminate conventional dairy products. The best dairy products are raw, unpasteurised and homogenised dairy from grass fed cows.  If this is unavailable, then buy organic dairy.
  • Avoid conventional beef. The best beef is organic grass fed beef.

Supplements:

The following nutrients can help regulate thyroid function: vitamin A, vitamin B complex, vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, choline, trace minerals, iodine, kelp, and thyroid glandulars.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, hyperthyroidism is down to yin deficiency and the leading herbs used are: Rehmannia (shu di huang), dioscorea (shan yao), and cornus (shan zhu yu)

A traditional recipe for dietary therapy of Yin Deficiency is as follows: to three cups of water, add tremella (silver ear fungus), 10g; black fungus (black ear mushroom), 10g; and rock-type sugar, 30g. Cook for one hour. Eat one serving a day.

Aromatherapy

The following essential oils are particularly beneficial:

Lavender  – has a harmonizing effect on the nervous system, acting as a sedative for those who experience symptoms of emotional and mental agitation and stress. Also good for insomnia, especially when the cause is stress and anxiety.

Bergamot  – good for both anxiety relief and to regulate appetite. Also has sedative and uplifting effects on the nervous system, as well as antidepressant properties, which can help with fatigue.

Peppermint  – helps to cool down the body and mind, as well as stimulating circulation, which can both strengthen and calm the nervous system. Excellent for addressing hyperthyroidism symptoms of nervousness, fatigue and heat intolerance.

Herbs

The following herbs are useful:

Lemon Balm –  this can supportthe thyroid and also normalize the accelerated thyroid function that occurs in hyperthyroidism. The University of Maryland Medical Center advises that a dose of 300 to 500mg three times a day may be effective. This herb is prepared by steeping 2 tbsp. in 1 cup of water and then allowing it to strain and cool.

Green Tea – beneficial because of its antioxidant effect, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. A standard extract of 250 to 500 mg a day should be free of caffeine.

Bugleweed – can help normalize an overactive thyroid. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that a dose of 1 to 2g may be of benefit for proper thyroid function, including a condition called thyroiditis, in which your thyroid becomes inflamed. You can prepare this herb by steeping 1 to 2g in 1 cup of boiling water, straining it and then letting it cool. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that this herb can interact with some diabetic medications, so consult your doctor before taking this herb.

Motherwort –  can help normalize a rapid heartbeat that can occur in both hyperthyroidism and other thyroid conditions, such as thyroiditis. The University of Maryland Medical Center advises that a dose of 2g steeping in 1 cup of boiling water, strained and cooled, may be of benefit for proper thyroid function. You can drink this dose three times per day.

Other

Juice Therapy: Drink carrot, celery, spinach, and parsley juice; or juice made from a combination of cabbage, watercress, and spinach.

Yoga – The physical postures and breathing exercises comprising the practice of yoga have long been proven by scientific research to promote feelings of relaxation while simultaneously strengthening the body. Research conducted since the 1970s has shown that regular yoga practice not only relieves stress, and stressful emotions such as anxiety and depression, but also improves blood pressure rates and overall cardiovascular health. Yoga is also effective for reducing pain, improving gastrointestinal and respiratory function, and for improving cognitive function and enhancing sight and hearing.
