Candida is a type of yeast, (the most important being Candida albicans) and lives naturally in the gastrointestinal tract. Mild infection from Candida, termed Candidiasis, occurs when the microfloral balance is disturbed which causes the yeast to suddenly overgrow in moist skin areas of the body. It is usually a result of a weakened immune system, but can be a side effect of chemotherapy or treatment with antibiotics or certain drugs, pregnancy and in disease conditions including diabetes mellitus and Cushing’s syndrome. It may also be caused due to poor hygiene.
