Fiber or high fiber foods are a key element to any healthy diet. What used to be known as roughage is now referred to as: fiber. Fiber is an indigestible complex carbohydrate found in plants. It has no calories and is not absorbable. Fiber is divided into two categories: water-insoluble and water-soluble. Water-insoluble fiber prevents constipation and helps bulk up the stool to move through the colon more rapidly. Water-soluble fiber regulates blood sugar and cholesterol levels. It is better to get fiber from whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains rather than from fiber supplements simply because food has the added value of being nutritious.
