Description: Plaque, caused by common bacteria in the mouth, is the leading cause of cavities, bad breath and gum disease. It is important to brush daily to prevent and remove buildup; however, most toothbrushes do not remove all of it. Plaque tends to be very resistant because of its positive charge. Our teeth have a negative polarity and this is how the plaque is able to bind to our teeth. An ionic toothbrush works by altering these charges temporarily and the plaque is no longer able to stick to the teeth.
What to look for: Look for a brush with a removable head (brush) so that it can be replaced often without the purchase of an entire new brush. The brush should be about the same size as a manual toothbrush, which is easiest to work with in the tiny crevices of the mouth. Some come with a built in battery tester, which is good to ensure best results.
Uses: Should be used at least twice a day to reduce bacteria, plaque and to freshen breath. Brush teeth and gums gently as you normally would. The only difference is that a moist finger must be held over the ionic plate on the handle while brushing, for best results.
Where to find: Online resources and health food stores.
Avoid: Avoid a buildup of toothpaste residue on the brush, as it can adversely affect performance. The brush should be rinsed well after each use and stored in a dry place.
