The effect of ionized water on myalgic encephalomyelitis

Drinking alkaline water from The Water Ionizer can have a therapeutic effect on some cases of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

We are 70% water. Water is an extraordinary substance. It is composed of hydrogen and oxygen – two gasses. Theoretically, water should also be a gas, rendering it useless as a life supporting medium. But water molecules form clusters, causing water to be a liquid.

US scientists have recently been able to investigate the small ionised clusters of water molecules that are constantly forming and reforming in liquid water.

Water ionizer The Water Ionizer

This machine electrolyses tap water with a pH of between 7 and 8, and converts it into two streams. One stream is alkaline, with a pH of between 9 and 10. The other stream is acidic, with a pH of around 6. In this article, I report on the therapeutic effects of the alkaline stream on my Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

Some Theoretical and Research Aspects

Research into ionized water (IW) has reputedly been going on in Japan since the1950s. The following claims have been made for it. However, I have scoured the Internet for peer-reviewed articles on the subject of its therapeutic effects, in the English language, without success. These claims must therefore be viewed with some scepticism until such time as further research substantiates or refutes them.

The Hunza People

The Hunza people live in the Karakoram Mountains and display exceptional longevity. They habitually drink glacial run-off water. This has a high pH (alkaline) and contains a large amount of active hydrogen atoms that are free radical scavengers. The Japanese ionized water developed since the 1950s was an attempt to replicate this natural ionized water.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)

NMR shows that tap water clusters consist of 10 -13 molecules. In the alkaline stream from The Water Ionizer, the water clusters are smaller, at 5 – 8 molecules. These smaller water clusters reduce the surface tension of the water. They also reduce the surface tension of the extracellular fluids inside the body. This improves cell hydration. It also improves the absorption of nutrients and the removal of toxins across the cell membrane.

The Oxidation-Reduction Potential (ORP)

All liquids have an ORP, which provides a measure of the antioxidant effect of the liquid and is measured in millivolts. The lower the ORP, the more powerful the antioxidant effect. The maximum level is +1200 millivolts. The minimum level is –800 millivolts.

Normal tap water has an ORP of +250 to +400. Its antioxidant effect is negligible. Fresh squeezed orange juice has an ORP of –250, indicating a significant antioxidant effect, but pasteurisation will virtually destroy this effect. The ORP of the alkaline stream from The Water Ionizer is –200 to –350, indicating a significant antioxidant effect.

Free radicals

Free radicles cause cellular damage and contribute to premature aging. The antioxidant activity of ionized water is significantly higher than that of tap water and this helps to inhibit the rate of oxidation produced by free radicals.

Over the last 20 years, much Japanese scientific evidence has accumulated relating to the importance of maintaining body pH for good health and well-being. Most of this has not been translated into English. But research on the need for maintaining the body’s acid/alkaline balance is beginning to surface in the West. The high pH of IW may help to neutralise the tendency of the body towards acidosis, particularly as the body ages.

As we age, we tend to become chronically dehydrated, but do not develop a corresponding increase in thirst to provide natural compensation. This dehydration decreases the proportion of intracellular water relative to extracellular water – it ‘dries out’ the cells. This undesirable effect of age can be overcome by making a conscious effort to drink more water, ideally 2 pints (1 litre) of ionized (alkaline) water per day.

Medical History

I was born in 1926. I developed Bornholm Disease in 1951, being otherwise healthy until 1965.

In 1965 I was a single-handed GP with four surgeries a day and a busy social life. In September 1965, a ‘flu immunisation triggered a debilitating syndrome characterised by profound fatigue, aching muscles, headaches, severe insomnia, numerous allergies, loose stools and many other symptoms. Laboratory tests were all normal. I was told that I was depressed!

Today, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis would be high on the list of differential diagnoses, but it was eleven years before this diagnosis was reached in my case.

Over a period of forty years I gradually brought my ME under a high degree of control by adopting a strict programme of lifestyle management. This programme included:

  1. Eating a 100% organic diet.
  2. Adopting the Hay Diet (‘Food Combining for Health’).
  3. Reducing my lectin intake by avoiding all grains.
  4. Supplementing my diet with ‘Prime Directive’ – an effective organic food supplement containing twelve strains of Acidophilus that are resistant to stomach acid.
  5. Neutralisation therapy for my numerous allergies
  6. Hypnotherapy, acupuncture and other alternative therapies.
  7. Drinking only water filtered through a ceramic candle lined with activated silver carbon.

Clinical Progress

At the nadir of my ME I was only able to walk for 100 yards on the flat. As a result of the above measures I improved greatly and was later able to walk for 7 miles through hilly country. I continued to improve slowly, but still experienced ‘ME unwell’ 1 days once or twice a week. I also experienced considerable, unpredictable, fluctuations in my physical symptoms and feeling of well-being. This was frustrating, significantly interfering with planning my life.

In April 2005, I came across the ‘Water Ionizer’.

Clinical Results of Drinking Ionized Water

In the beginning I was, to say the least, extremely sceptical about the claims made for Ionized Water (IW) and I made my negative attitude very clear to the UK distributors of The Water Ionizer. Nevertheless, they made a machine available to me and I began to experiment, quite objectively, on the effect of IW on my body. Here is my diary since then:

May 3 2005

Started to drink IW instead of water that had been filtered through a ceramic candle with an activated silver carbon lining.

Became quite ill for 48 hours, probably due to a detoxification reaction similar to a Herxheimer reaction. Thereafter, I felt better than I had for many years. I did not believe this result, attributing it to a placebo response. But my favourable response to IW persisted and I decided to do further tests.

May and June 2005

At intervals of between one and eight days, I reverted from Ionized Water to filtered tap water on five separate occasions.

Each time that I reverted to tap water I became very ill within twenty four hours. This deterioration persisted for periods ranging from two to six days and was clearly not a detoxification reaction. The deterioration was reversed within twenty-four hours of reverting to IW. I finally became convinced of the therapeutic effect of IW on my ME and drank only IW from then on.

August 10 2005

By now, I had felt continuously well for 48 days – something that had not happened in 40 years!

During the rest of August I had only two ‘ME Unwell’ days!

September 2005

I was able to discontinue the antihistamines that I had been taking daily for several decades. There were no undesirable side effects from the withdrawal. I had tried to do this previously on several occasions, but failed. I could not have accomplished this had I not been drinking IW.

I unintentionally reduced my total daily intake of IW. A gradual deterioration took place over a 3 week period. When I realised what was happening, I increased my IW intake and reverted to feeling completely well again within 24 hours. I continued to drink 2 pints of IW and experienced only one ‘ME Unwell’ day in the ensuing 5 weeks!

December 22 2005

I have not experienced an ‘ME Unwell’ day for 12 weeks, a period of well-being that I have not experienced in 40 years.

Miscellaneous Observations

I have experienced placebo responses to various therapies in the past, but these were always short lived. Previous experience with experimenting on my body, over a period of forty years, has enabled me to distinguish between ‘real’ and ‘placebo’ effects. After performing the above experiments on my body I became convinced that the therapeutic effect of IW was not a placebo effect.

The unpredictable variations in my well-being, endured for forty years, have now virtually disappeared. I live life on an even keel and can plan ahead – for which I am extremely grateful.

The elasticity of my skin also seems to have improved.

Other Anecdotal Evidence Is Accumulating In The UK

For example, I spoke to a Dr Samways, a Surrey holistic doctor, who has found ionized water beneficial for her mould allergy. I have also spoken to a Sue Edgley whose family and friends have improved after drinking the water.

In this article, I have described the therapeutic effects of IW on my Myalgic Encephalomyelitis.

When tested over a total period of 33 weeks, I demonstrated, to my own satisfaction at least, that IW has had a marked therapeutic effect on my ME. I feel better than I have for forty years. I have no intention of reverting to ordinary water unless I discover undesirable side effects from IW. My preliminary experiments on myself are encouraging and worth reporting at this time.

The Future

IW may have a subjective therapeutic effect on other subjects suffering from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia. I intend to research this possibility. I also intend to investigate the objective effects of IW on such patients, using Live Blood Microscopy to measure the Neutrophil Vitality Index2 before and after the patient has undertaken the Midgley Protocol3 , which includes drinking only IW.

1 I can easily distinguish between malaise brought on by a cold or ‘flu, etc and malaise brought on by a relapse of my ME. For the purposes of this article, I call the latter an ‘ME Unwell’ day.
